Carter Family biography, the good country music people
In the Carter Family biography history, country music got a real good beginning with the family. They were from Maces Springs, Virgina. Today it is named Hiltons Town. They performed country music from 1927 to about 1943. In 1932, they recorded the song, "Will the Circle be Unbroken". Since 1932, they recorded over three hundred country songs and gospel hymns. The group was composed of Alvin Carter his wife Sara Dougherty and Maybelle Addington, who was married to Alvin's brother Ezra. Maybelle's daughter, June joined the group in 1940, and later married
Johnny Cash
Continuing with the Carter Family biography, in 1942 and 1943 they played on WBT Radio in Charlotte North Carolina. They did their last radio show in 1942. Maybelle continued with her daughters, Helene, Anita and
June Carter
working on WRWL Radio in Richmond, Virginia till 1946. In 1943, Sara left the group and moved to California. In 1949, they played on the Tennessee Barn Dance in Knoxville. In 1950, they played on the
Grand Ole Opry
in Nashville Tennessee. In 1952, the family appeared on the Kate Smith Show with
Hank Williams
and Roy Acuff. In 1969, the Carter Sisters were part of the "Johnny Cash Show". Continuing with the Carter Family biography, they were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame the 21st of May, 1970. They were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and received an award for the song "Can the Circle be Unbroken". Many of their songs and tunes were later sung by Woody Gauthrie, Pete Seeger,
Bob Dylan
as well as many other singers. In 1993 the U.S. Postal Service issued a postage stamp honoring them. In the Town of Hiltons the house of A.P. and Sara Carter, are still there as well as the General Store which was owned by them. The house can be seen from the highway, which was also named after the Carter Family. In 2003, June Carter Cash died at the age of 73 in the Baptist Hospital in Nashville Tennessee.
