Sam Phillips biography, he was owner of Sun Records.



In Sam Phillips biography, he was born Samuel Corneilius Phillips, January 5, 1923.

He became a Record Producer and the man responsible for the emergence of the Blues, Rock and Roll and Country Music as the form of music in the fifties and early Sixties.

He is most notably attributed with the discovery of Elvis Presley.

He opened his studio in Memphis, Tennessee at 706, Union Avenue the 3rd of January, 1951.

In February, 1952 he named it Sun Records as sign of his optimism, of a new day and a new beginning.

Sam was a patient man and listen to almost anyone who wanted to do a recording.

When he started his studio he recorded the songs of Black singers like, BB King and Howling Wolf.

He kept looking for a white singer and he found him in 1954.Continuing with Sam Phillips biography, his name was Elvis Presley and when he sang, That,s All Right Mamma, Sam was Sold on him.

Elvis Success brought many new singers to Sun Record Company, such as, Johnny Cash , Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, Conway Twitty and many other super singers.

In 1955 RCA Records brought Elvis's Contract from Sun Record Company, for the sum of $35,000. He Sold it because he was in debt, and needed the money.

Sam Phillips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

In 1998, he was inducted in the Blues Hall of Fame.

He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2001.

Sam Phillips died of respiratory failure in Memphis Tennessee on the 30 of July, 2003.
