He was raised in Start, Louisiana a struggling farm community and he is the son of Frank Edwin Tug McGraw, who was a relief pitcher for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia, Phillies. He attended Louisiana State University and studied sports and medicine. He wanted to be like his father, and go into baseball. He dropped out of University in 1989, and went to live in Nashville, Tennessee. He taught himself how to play the guitar at eighteen years old, it was at that time he decided that music would be his future instead of sports.

He signed a contract with Curd Records in 1990, but it took at least two more years for him to become a well known country star.
